Liberty to Practice

Nurses are pivotal actors in delivering quality care within the organization and without. They have the potential to influence outcomes positively or negatively by providing patient-centered care, integrated care, and implementing community interventions. However, suggestions to expand nurse’s role in giving care are resisted. Physician organizations cite patient safety as a precaution against role expansion. Physicians believe medicine to be a complex and technical undertaking that requires clinical and mental knowledge as well as a unique education that nurses lack. Nurses are undervalued so much so that they get their compensation through the physicians they work with rather than directly.

Nurse’s Higher Education Through Better Education System that Promotes Academic Development

The "Future of Nursing” publication indicates care providers as necessary to activate system adjustments. To achieve this, nurses at every level need to continually build on their knowledge. Moreover, learning opportunities should be open to individuals of varying ethnicities as well. It is only through competency-based education that nurses can understand and participate in systemic change, including improvement procedures. The education system should be a platform for continuous learning about patient care, before and after licensure.

The partnerships between healthcare providers and learning institutions have increased. Health institutions have an understanding with schools to accept nursing students periodically. These arrangements ensure hospitals have adequate nursing students for practicums throughout. It has improved the response of healthcare employers in recruiting nurses. Learning institutions have also began online programs to reach working nurses as well.

BSN-prepared nurses can be absorbed in a range of departments. They have opportunities to advance their education to achieve masters and doctoral degrees and serve as primary care nurses, faculty, and researchers. All of these positions are in great demand and jobs will be readily available to BSN nurses.

Importance of the Evolution of a Nurse’s Role and Education

Health needs vary across age groups, ethnicities, and socio-economic status of individuals. Senior patients may need encouragement and platforms to engage with others. People of different backgrounds have different beliefs and cultures that may negatively affect care plans. Nurses need to understand these behaviors to apply appropriate procedures designed to change thinking that gets in the way of treatment. Nurses need to educate patients while maintaining respect and being sensitive to their beliefs. The overarching goal is to achieve better outcomes for all, and this can be achieved by building strong relationships between providers and patients. Advancement in nursing education prepares nurses to serve in other capacities. For example, conducting nursing research requires more than the basic level of knowledge of patient care.

The Significance of Professional Development

It is difficult for a nurse or any other healthcare worker to absorb all the required information and skills by undergoing a single course. Not only do challenges, and technology differ, other factors evolve, including expectations and education. Through on-the-job training and professional development, nurses can offer quality and focused care. It enables nurses to communicate well, manage conflict, and collaborate to make shared decisions that better patient outcomes.

They are conscious of the limiting factors in the environment that influence patient care and health outcomes from the evidence they encounter. Therefore, they are well placed to campaign for new methods that bridge health gaps and improve outcomes for populations.
