The legalization of marijuana in the United States has been one of the most debated issues due to the varying positions on the topic. The move to support the legalization of marijuana in the United States has double up since 1999. Groups that advocate for the legalization of marijuana believe that the product is medically beneficial, safe for use and assists in the management of the risks of opioid addiction. American’s older generation feel that the use of marijuana is not wrong because it was used in social functions including concerts. Also, such groups think that the government will be able to generate more revenue regarding taxes.

Unknown to many people there is a dark side to the legalization of marijuana. Educating people about the negative impacts of pot is vital particularly for states that are yet to legalize the drug. Groups that do not support the legalization of marijuana argue that it is associated with adverse mental health risks, for instances, schizophrenia, hallucinations, and psychoses disorders. Marijuana legalization is not the best move because it will lead to increased use among the American, for example, the daily users of cannabis have risen from three million in 2005 to around eight million today.

Besides, the effects of legalizing marijuana have started to be felt in hospitals. Cases of marijuana-use disorder had tripled to 90,000 in 2014 from 30, 000 cases in 2006 (Berenson, 2019) . The legalization of marijuana is associated with increased violent crimes in states like Washington, Oregon, and Alaska where incidences of aggravated assaults and murders have been on the rise since 2014. The move to legalize marijuana will deny the government revenue concerning taxes since it will be difficult for the government to regulate cannabis from black markets. Legalizing recreational marijuana will lead to reduced prices, high availability of the product and usage.
