One of the social issues that has been under discussion for a considerable time is the legalization of marijuana. While I disagree with such a stance because of the related negatives, it is necessary to show those that I oppose the reason behind my perspective. This is though giving evidence-based reasons as to why I oppose the legalization of the drug.
The legalization of marijuana is one of the most debated issues today that I disagree with. Most of the proponents say that it is less harmful than alcohol and can be a significant source of income to the federal government. Besides the argument that it has recreational benefits and can create income and jobs for particular demographics, those who argue for its legalization think it is likely to save taxpayers money that is used to handle marijuana legal-related issues such as trafficking. I think the logic is flawed because the negatives related to the legalization of marijuana are more than the positives. The drug is likely to be easily accessible to more youths who are likely to abuse it and be influenced to engage in crime to afford the drug and satisfy their addiction. Other related negative consequences are likely to be highly costly. An example is emergency room visits influenced by accidents resulting from driving while high and the influence of marijuana abuse on schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. In general, it is likely to cause a mental health crisis.

The social and health impacts related to the legalization of marijuana are also likely to outweigh the benefits. Youths are mainly likely to abuse this drug, a factor that will negatively affect their cognitive development. It is also likely to negatively influence their risk perception. They are therefore likely to engage in risky undertakings such as robbery with violence, entertain promiscuous behavior and disregard ethics. A dysfunctional society is the likely end result because such vices are, in most cases are hard to manage.
I would try to show the person that my position is more logical by quoting scholarly research against the legalization of marijuana. I would also try to show them the social effects of addiction to hard drugs on some neighborhoods, such as inner-city New York. I would point out the issues such as high levels of crime and poverty. I would argue that if hard drug use in such a neighborhood has only resulted in a dysfunctional rather than a thriving community.
In conclusion, the legalization of marijuana remains to be a highly debated topic in different spaces. Those who support its legalization cite reasons such as increased government revenue, employment creation, and that it is not as harmful as other legal drugs such as alcohol. I am opposed to such views because the social, health, and economic effects of the use of marijuana are more than the positives. Convincing the other person that my viewpoint is more valid would entail quoting published research about the negatives of marijuana legalization and giving examples of neighborhoods that have been negatively affected by drug use.

Socrates was considered guilty of corrupting the youths because of his teachings that did not acknowledge the government of the time. He was a proponent of questioning the authority other than accepting the status quo. Most importantly, he significantly criticized democracy, a philosophy that he passed to his students. He did not believe in using the ballot to elect representatives and had made his sentiments widely known to his students. Socrates apologized by presenting a defense against the charges brought against him. He argued that he did not do anything wrong. Part of his apology entailed rebuking the judges for sentencing him to death. He also defended himself against the use of eloquence to prove his innocence.
During the trial, Socrates was found guilty and sentenced to death. However, Socrates joked that his punishment should be in the form of free meals at the Prytaneum. This suggestion was refuted, but he suggested a fine of 100 drachmae which was also not accepted. Although a fine of 3,000 drachmae was accepted in the end, the prosecutor insisted on the death penalty. Against the advice of his friends, students, and followers, he accepted the verdict.
If Socrates were in the US in 2021, he would not be accused of corrupting the youth. Freedom of speech is a right protected by the constitution. Individuals' dynamic views are today respected and welcomed in the US. Although some would criticize his stance, many would appreciate his point of view.
