The pyramids in Egypt and the Stonehenge in England

The pyramids in Egypt and the Stonehenge in England are historical structures that have stood the test of time and have preserved history for centuries. The structures have attracted archaeologists and tourists since they carry a great wealth of history. This paper will discuss the similarities and differences between the two structures.

Similarities

What stands out conspicuously when one sees the pyramids in Egypt and the Stonehenge in England is the fact that both structures are conspicuously made of stone. They were built around the same time; the pyramid at Giza dates back to 2560 BCE while the Stonehenge was constructed somewhere between 3000 and 1400 BCE. The two structures are still a spectacle in the world today and both preserve history. Both structures are conspicuously aligned with the stars and various aspects of the universe. The essence of the structures was to acknowledge the existence of a superior being who controlled the universe. The structures were sacred places and both acted as burial grounds and were used to hold religious ceremonies. Both buildings have a rough texture because of the stone used in construction. No one can really tell how the two structures were made, which makes it difficult to disclose the exact technique used to stack the stones together. Both structures represent supernatural forces and were aligned using geometric shapes; the pyramids take the shape of a triangle whereas the Stonehenge is circular. Human beings constructed them both structures during a time when the use of machines was not commonplace. In as much as a lot of engineering can be seen in the construction details, it is interesting to note that farmers built both structures.

Differences

Despite the above-mentioned similarities, the two structures are different in very many ways. To begin with, it is conspicuous that the two structures have different shapes. The pyramids bear the shape of a prism whereas the Stonehenge is circular. Besides, the pyramids are hundreds of feet tall whereas the Stonehenge stands at about 10-20 feet. In as much as the two structures were both used as burial grounds, the Stonehenge was used as a crematorium whereas the pyramids were used to bury only the pharaohs. This means that they were only preserved for the well-known in the society. Consequently, the pyramids were built on various sites such as Giza, Abu Sir, Saqqara and Meidum only to mention a few. On the other hand, the Stonehenge was only constructed in Wiltshire, England and it is the only structure of its kind in England. The pyramids appear to have a complex and more detailed structure compared to the Stonehenge. The architectures of the pyramids seem to have taken a lot of time on the plan of the structures, which appear more organized and detailed. Nevertheless, in as much as the Stonehenge looks simple, it does not have a detailed structure compared to the pyramids. The pyramids in Egypt bear detailed written language known as hieroglyphics, which one can vividly see, inscribed on the walls of the pyramids, which is clearly missing on the Stonehenge in England. It is said that the pyramids were constructed over a period of 20 years whereas the Stonehenge was constructed for close to 100 years. The visual impression of the Stonehenge appears as ragged mass of stones piled together to form a structure which appears rough and coarse. Contrary to this, the pyramids appear organized in a well- calculated triangle, which appears smooth and neatly arranged.

The pyramids in Egypt and the Stonehenge in England are great historical structures that preserve history and make history interesting.
