With the rapid technological advancement the current generation has been exposed to the world of gadgets and internet. Being naive and innocent they are bound to make mistakes that may cost them dearly. A publication in the HuffPost article highlighted the plight of a 16 year old teenager who found herself in such dilemma and how the state is struggling to deal with the changing realities in teenage behavior. The teenager was charged under child pornography statute for producing a video of herself in sexual acts and distributing it to minors. However, the video was distributed by one of her friends without her consent. Child pornography statute was originally designed to protect children from exploitation not to prosecute them (Melissa 2019). However, in this case it seems that the teenager has been condemned by the same acts that were enacted to protect her. The article clearly shows that the laws are skewed and there is need to review them and accommodate the behavioral changes of teenagers in the current society. The article being in defense of the teenager is understandable as the video was circulated without her consent and all the parties involved were participating in a game of outdoing each other. The article brings to light the vices of the internet and social media when used for the wrong reasons and the consequences. Despite exposing flaws in the laws it would have been safe to take a stand of neutrality since an offense were committed. The article has given compelling reasons that there is a need to review the laws to ensure that those laws will not be used against the people it is supposed to protect. It has also advocated for other avenues of resolving such matters especially if minors are involved. The consequences of taking a teenager through court process are traumatizing. However, the article should also have given its thought on dealing with social media to curb such incidences.
