1. This is a story about aging. What do you like most about being the age you are now. What aspects of growing older do you look forward to? What aspects of growing older are undesirable to you?

The most exciting thing about being a youth is the variety of choices that one has, being a youth is a series of experiments that through trials and errors makes one a better version of themselves. Through the fruits of the youth, one becomes mature and gains the virtue and wisdom of age. Thus, the most beautiful aspect of growing old is the moral superiority since elderly are more restrained to behaviors and choices. The most undesirable aspects of old age are the consequences of the folly of youth since those mistakes lead to bitter and miserable regrets in later years as one gets old.

2 . If people could gain their youth again, do you think they would make the same mistakes? Explain

Yes. This is because youth is a dangerous and fleeting stage of life that one is supposed o learn from rather than revisit it or admire. Being young gives one variety of choices, and each choice has a consequence, there is not a single choice that is superior without flaws it is a matter of experimenting. Wisdom comes with age and therefore being a youth has beauty and recklessness that will lead to making the same mistakes repeatedly.

3 . Foreshadowing is a writer's use of hints or clues to indicate events that will occur later in a story. It is a technique that builds suspense and arouses the leader's curiosity. Record two effective examples of foreshadowing that Hawthorne uses in Dr. Heidegger’s experiment.

Comment or event : The full-length portrait of Dr. Heideggar’s spouse on the barricade

Foreshadows : The disappointment of the testing since she had died on a bridal evening after swallowing one of his prescriptions reveals that youth brings along failures and errors

Comment or event : when the Dr. dips the rose (given to him by Sylvia Ward) into the water in the vase

Foreshadows : The rose becomes fresh, new and dewy, which hints at what will happen to his friends as they drink the water of youth. The rose points to the moral of the story that aging brings along benefits such as wisdom and reflection.

4. An Allegory is a work of literature in which people, objects, and events represent abstract qualities, such as good and evil. Allegories are written not only to entertain but also to teach lessons or moral principles. As you read "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" Complete the following by identifying an abstract quality or idea that each guest in the story might represent.

Example: Character- Mr. Medbourne What he or she loses or wastes-Wealth What happens when he or she is given a second youth-Schemes to make money again: He will be greedy

Complete below:

Character- Col. Killigrew What he wastes: wastes his life away partying and living the high life What happens: he will represent sinful pleasure
