Respiration is the bodily process of breathing in and out. A respiratory cycle is one complete cycle involving inhaling and exhaling. The Bible refers to God as the giver of life and breath. Genesis 2:7 states, “Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.” Furthermore, according to Job 34:14–15, “If God were to take back his spirit and withdraw his breath, all life would cease, and humanity would turn again to dust.” Therefore, there is a relationship between the concept of the breath of life as presented in the bible and the physiological requirement for oxygen to keep cells and tissues alive.
Human beings breathe in oxygen while giving out carbon dioxide through both internal and external respiration. Internal respiration ensures the exchange of gases in the tissues. Both cells and tissues require oxygen to remain alive. Hence, oxygen is transported to body tissues through the red blood cells (Betts et al., 2011). In cells, oxygen is diffused out of the capillary and into the cells to keep them alive (Betts et al., 2011).

The breath of life in the bible is related to the physiological process of keeping cells alive in that God created humans to be complex beings, which shows the life-giving presence of God (Demick, 2004). Furthermore, breathing is the backbone of all life, such that if it stops, growth will end. God, being the creator of all living and non-living things reserves the power to give and take away life, as described in Job 34:14-15.
There are certain respiratory diseases such as lung cancer which is caused by tobacco use. Tobacco increases toxins in the respiratory system, which results in death if prolonged (Demick, 2004). This knowledge advances that life could be cut short in the presence of diseases, which equates to God withdrawing his breath.
In conclusion, respiration is the process of breathing that facilitates life. God is the giver and creator of life, hence breathing is attributed to His craftsmanship. Recent research has shown that toxins in the body may lead to severe breathing hence death. Therefore, hindering the process of respiration also results in death.
