The journal "Veterans and Mental Health," written by Pamela Harrigan in February 2018, puts across major issues that impede the provision of relevant health care to veterans. According to the journal article, healthcare providers and nurses lack education on the health of the veterans, and still, others fail to assess these war heroes for Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PSTD). The article clearly states that the provision of adequate care for the current 20 million US veterans is not an issue that concerns only the private sector but rather of concern to the nursing and the nursing leadership entities (Harrigan, 2018). Nurses and all other front-line healthcare providers are required to ensure early identification and treatment of both physical and mental health issues of the veterans and, therefore, the need for such training to be put forth for all nurses and practitioners.

The journal article “Veteran Care," written by Colonel John Murray in September 2013, explains how veterans always get lost in the system while transitioning from the US Department of Defense (DoD) to the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) (Murray, 2013). Just as it is with any other transition, this transfer results in lack of continuity in health care and delays in the reception of necessary health services. According to the article, many veterans live in parts of the country where VA services are not easily accessible, and hence they opt to use the services of non-military and non-VA providers, which in most cases do not cater to their health needs adequately.

The journal article “ Spiritual Care in Nursing Practice in Veteran Health Care," written in May 2019, explains the importance of spiritual care in the nursing practice. Just as the writers of the article state, the spiritual wellbeing as well as spiritual care is closely associated with better health of every individual person (Burkhart & Gerc, 2019). The journal article clearly states that veterans require spiritual care to help them cope with chronic conditions and hence the more reason nurses should adopt provision of spiritual care to this unique patient population.
