The role of a health care manager is an important part in the medical institution. There are four key functions that serve as responsibilities for a health care manager including organizing, planning, controlling and leading. These functions ensure that the services offered by medical practitioners flow seamlessly without making patients wait for too long while guaranteeing quality services both for inpatient and outpatient care facilities. The duties of these managers are integral towards improved outcomes for the patients served. The following report discusses a reflection of the importance of health care management and its numerous complexities as it applies to the medical profession.

Definition of a health care manager

Through extensive study of this course my definition of a health care manager has changed significantly. I had earlier believed that these managers’ only sit back and watch on as the other medical professionals undertake their different tasks within the hospital setting. However, this is not the case as the health care managers have a major role of ensuring the delegation of these duties. In a large hospital setting, it is essential for extensive planning to take place such that treatment of patients seems almost seamless (Buchbinder, & Shanks, 2016). These service managers have a major responsibility of determining which task goes first by prioritizing each one of them. If the objective goals are not met, one has to go back to the drawing board as a means of determining where the problem lies. The process of planning may have to begin from the very start where each decision made towards creating the schedules of work is evaluated for its ability to achieve the desired goal. Though numerous achievements may be realized, it is essential that the health care manager points out the various weaknesses and identify the multiple ways of minimizing their effects (Buchbinder, & Shanks, 2016).

What skills and knowledge do you need to develop to prepare yourself to become a health care manager?

There are numerous skills essential for the role of a health care manager. The first and probably the most important is problem solving skills. In this case, during the process of working with numerous professionals, it is evident that not everything will go as planned. Various processes may be delayed due to errors of the people in the setting. However, it is the duty of a health care manager to develop effective techniques of solving the problems that may come up (Buchbinder, & Shanks, 2016). The subordinates will always look up to their leader to provide insight on the various ways that will help improve effective functioning.

Another primary skill required by a health care manager is the ability to work well with other medical professionals. These managers are recognized as leaders who have the responsibility of influencing the medical professionals to undertake different practices and in so doing working as a unit. The leader should also have a character of motivating and inspiring these individual (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2017). In the medical industry, due to the work-related stress many of the professionals may opt to give up entirely on their careers in an effort to achieve a piece of mind. However, the health care manager should be able to recognize these signs and provide the employees with encouragement to push on and overcome the stressing factors.

Finally, the skill essential for becoming an effective health care manager is establishing balance between control and autonomy. As a service manager, one should note that he or she is working with experts who have the appropriate training to undertake their different roles (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2017). The leader should allow workers to take the instruction and work on their own and minimize micromanagement of tasks.
