Ms. Fowler discusses the role ethics plays in the nursing profession and the importance of social ethics-based nursing in the development and formulation of sound health policies. This article stresses that, from its inception, the ethics of nursing has been based on social ethics. Integration of the same in nursing curricula will enable nursing organizations and individual nurses fulfill their moral duty of social engagement. Fowler continues to address how professional nursing bodies can, also in fulfillment of their moral obligation, participate in national and global health policy formulation. Not only does this article introduce the concept of social ethics in nursing, but it also succinctly describes how civic professionalism can be integrated into the professional curricula. Generally, this article provides specific illuminating insight into just how integral social ethics is to the nursing profession.

Personally, this article has been extremely informative and key to my understanding of socially-based ethics in nursing. Prior to reading it, I was not consciously and fully appreciative of the significance social ethics has in nursing nor that it has been a feature from its inception. After reading this article I wonder how many other professionals or future professionals are aware of this revolutionary application of the concept of nursing ethics. Not only does the social ethics approach to nursing seek to move curricula away from the technical to restore its professionalism, but according to Fowler, it can also be a tool for effecting social justice and healing the natural world as well.
