School going children are the most vulnerable group when it comes to disease contraction. Many diseases are cropping up like the Covid-19. Some are becoming harder to treat, such as influenza and other bacterial infections due to their resistance to drugs (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2016) . Nurses, therefore, have a very crucial role in the provision of health care service to these children and service that is comprehensive. A significant number of new entrants in schools come with chronic health problems that require health management during the day and can only be done by a professional health care nurse. After home, school becomes the second most influential place in a child’s life. To ensure that there is coordinated care for children in schools, understanding the roles of a school nurse is essential. There is a vivid relationship between health and learning, as portrayed by the availability of a school nurse and the wellness of the students and success in academic endeavors. The role of a school nurse, therefore, encompasses health promotion, health prevention, and educational goals. School nurses achieve their objectives by working hand in hand with school physicians, community organizations, and community physicians.

School nurses wear so many hats, and as educators, they play a critical role in health care education in the school setting. For restoration, maintenance, or instead promotion of good health in schools, the students need to undergo an education program for health care with much emphasis given in the classroom. Research shows that individuals maintain excellent health standards, especially when they understand their health correctly (Maughan et al., 2018) . The students are, therefore, trained to make informed decisions with reference to their health. The students will, therefore, be able to cope with any long-term or temporary alterations in general health. In the event of a pandemic, like in the case of Covid-19, health education from nurses would impact significantly on the personal responsibility of the students in the quest of curbing spread and infection by the virus at individual level ( Haynie et al., 2017) . It will be driven by the already acquired knowledge from the class prior to the outbreak of such deadly infections. There are so many diseases that are potential outbreaks around the world. The properties of such kind of conditions can comfortably be taught by a nurse in schools in preparedness to such outbreaks. Nurses usually are a bit comfortable in the delivery of information to their clients and, in this case, school-going children. The kind of information delivered by nurses to students is that which cannot efficiently and effectively be delivered at the household level ( Selekman et al., 2019) . Health education, with deep-seated origins in modern nursing, is increasingly becoming one of the main roles of the nurse. With education, the students at long last achieve self-care. Since time immemorial, educating people on health care has been a major call for nurses, and the best place to do this is the school, teaching them while they are still tender.

Keeping children in good health conditions is has been given to topmost priority by both the educational and health care systems (Holmes et al., 2016) . Children spend most of their time in school than at home with their parents. It, therefore, makes schools an excellent place for the promotion of good health in children. A student nurse is a uniquely positioned individual to meet such needs. Through leadership, the school nurses serve in developing policies and procedures for one sole objective of providing quality health care services. As an advocate for all students, the nurses provide skills and education that will see them become self-empowered and problem-solvers together with effective communication. The school nurse also serves to promote self-management, which is a critical aspect of the nurses. Nurses at the policy development committee serve to push for reforms on health care and education. The nurses have a strong belief that it is their duty to make improvements on issues related to health care. The school nurses also focus on community health care promotion. The community as a whole is reached out through the children in the promotion of the health care system. In the event of a severe outbreak like the corona-virus outbreak, the children are asked to stay home. The children are therefore expected to practice the safety measures and even extend to the general community about the same. When it comes to caring coordination, nurses are able to communicate actively and fluently to administrators of both education and nursing. The school nurse, therefore, becomes a very crucial interdisciplinary committee member in bringing forth the expertise that is equally important in the development of an education plan.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure, and school nurses have a very crucial role in ensuring that they pass knowledge to their students about the importance of preventing infections and diseases. The contraction of diseases can easily be prevented by practicing the necessary measures put in place for combating the infections. Some diseases are dreadful to children due to their low immunity levels. The immune systems of children easily compromised. Like in the case of Covid-19, the viral infection is very detrimental to children (COUNCIL, 2016) . Given that there is no cure yet for the disease, care needs to be taken into significant considerations, especially for vulnerable children. In order to achieve this, school nurses play the most critical role in instilling the necessary practice and behavior in children. The nurses formulate policies in the schools that help the administrators of the school make critical decisions take the steps required in ensuring that the students are safe and sound while in school and even extends to their homes. The nurses supervise the cleaning processes of the school to ensure that there is no widespread infection in the case of an outbreak in school.

The role of school nurses in a school setting is diverse in nature, and their role in health education, promotion, and prevention is primarily to give vital advice and support the school. The nurses do this other than delivering the services directly to the students (Freeland et al., 2018) . Address the issue of understaffing of the health nurses in school will largely assist the nurses in their diverse roles. Health education is a vast and important area, yet challenging in the endeavors of nurses performing their duty call in schools. All schools should have nurses as it is a very important tool in teaching the students on matters to do with diseases of medical importance. Nurses ought to find new ways of evaluating the levels of their impact on these school children from which necessary decisions and conclusions can be made. The society at large needs to understand and appreciate the role that school nurses play to ensure that the students become self-responsible in health matters.
