Part A: Description of the Conceptual Framework

The Roy adaptation model (RAM) is an extremely developed and broadly utilized conceptual description of the nursing discipline that is widely accepted by the nursing fraternity in nursing research, nursing practice, and nursing education (Naga & Al-Khasib, 2014). It is a representation of the grand nursing theory whose conceptual framework is designed to focus on a holistic interconnected person and how he or she interacts with her or his surroundings (Mintz-Binder, 2019). RAM is commonly applied globally as a guide to studies that seek to address adaptation. The model was developed by Sister Callista Roy in 1976 along with Dorothy Johnson, Helson, Lazarus, von Bertalanffy, and Rapport. The main concepts of nursing theory outlined in RAM are the person, the nurse, the health, the environment, and the adaptation ((Naga & Al-Khasib, 2014)).

RAM as a model is based on an approach where the person is viewed in a holistic manner with adaptation being the core concept (Naga & Al-Khasib, 2014)). The adaptation concept portrays an individual (the person) as an open system that exhibits stimuli-related response as a result of external and internal aspects of the individual/person. There exists a constant interaction on various levels between groups (communities, families) and individuals which lead to adaptation in the form of mutability as well as transformation. Nurses can, therefore, utilize the nursing process to check for the presence of maladaptive behavior and use it to generate care plans and clinical interventions to increase the chances of attaining positive adaptation for better results (Naga & Al-Khasib, 2014).

Part B: Review of the Evidence Guided by the Synergy Model

The Roy adaptation model will help in providing a review guidance of the evidence by allowing for the investigation of the existing relationship between adaptive modes and the environmental stimuli (contextual, Residual, and focal stimuli), observation of the impact/effect of environmental stimuli and adaptive mechanisms, and correlation of theory concept with research variables ((Naga & Al-Khasib, 2014)). Additionally, it allows for easy prediction of the research outcomes and recommendations as it provides answers to research questions in the project.

Does the Roy Adaptation Model help to explain the phenomenon? Yes, the Roy Adaptation Model is a representation of the grand nursing theory whose conceptual framework is designed to focus on a holistic person and how he or she interacts with the environment and how they respond to stimuli (Naga & Al-Khasib, 2014)). This enables them to utilize the nursing process to check for the presence of maladaptive behavior and use it to generate care plans and clinical interventions to increase the chances of attaining positive adaptation for better health results.

Does the Roy Adaptation Model guide each phase of the project? Yes, the Roy Adaptation Model, through a 3-step process uses a conceptual model to guide nursing research. This process involves learning and understanding the conceptual learning and its research guidelines, a literature review based on the utilization of RAM in research, communication as well as the construction of a conceptual-theoretical-empirical structure for various research topics or research studies, and diverse practice (Kitson, 2018)).

Does the Roy Adaptation Model help to identify variables? Yes, the Roy Adaptation model illustrates how adaptation and health can be integrated by use of the four modes of functioning which include self-concept, physiological, interdependence, and role function (Blais, 2015).

Does the Roy Adaptation Model help to locate outcome measures? Yes, the Roy Adaptation model allows for the utilization of nursing process in assessing maladaptive behavior which assists in ensuring that patient care is purposeful, controlled, effective and systematic which increases compliance as well as life expectancy (Blais, 2015).
