One of the most controversial topics is about the conscious. According to Antonio Damasio, consciousness is made up of two components which are the mind and the self. In essence, the mind is resident in the brain and therefore, what the mind creates is a direct product of the brain ( Damasio, 2011 ). According to the video, the mind is existent due to the working together of the cerebral cortex, the brain stem, and the body.

Significantly, the brain forms thought processes through images that the eyes see. Additionally, the brain stores memories and anticipate future events, which guides the process of thought. However, the mind cannot form the conscious without the self, which is made up of three levels; the proto self, core self, and autobiographical self ( Damasio, 2011 ). While humans' brain is similar to that of many vertebrates, the difference is the ability to anticipate the future. Also, animals have a conscious but do not have the autobiographical self-level of self.

Essentially, emotions like happiness and sadness are a product of the conscious. This fact is because the mind can keep memories and anticipate results from factors affecting the self in the physical environment. This idea is as opposed to Christian beliefs about feelings. For instance, the bible alludes that the source of human beings is God. The bible points out that God multiplies the nation and increases its joy ( Muzhchil, 2016 ). On the other, the mind, according to Christian belief, is in the heart. This suggestion indicates that the conscious is in one's heart, just like the soul. Essentially, this argument differs from Damasio, which claims that the conscious, just like the mind, is in the heart. Christianity views the self as being the soul that can still exist without the body ( Muzhchil, 2016 ). However, according to the video, the body affects the mind's existence in conjunction with the brain and the self, ceases to be in the absence of the body.
