Distancing occurs when people disengage themselves from roles, associations, or institutions that they previously belonged to. Associational distancing happens when homeless individuals decide to distance themselves from their associates who have been evaluated negatively. For instance, Jones says he is different from the other guys who hang out around Sally, and the researcher cannot learn about the street people by studying him. Role distancing involves a self-consciousness attempt to show a lack of commitment or association with a particular role to deny the self-implied role. For example, the drunkard man says that he had been paid $36 for a painting job, which was meant for a nigger. Institutional distancing occurs when homeless people distance themselves from caretaker agencies. For example, Hastings does not wish to associate with Sally, which was supposed to be a Christian organization but had failed.

Embracement suggests that homeless people agree to be associated with a specific or general role, social relationships, or a particular thought. Role embracement is manifested by the declaration and acceptance of street-role identities by the homeless people. For instance, Shotgun and others like him identified themselves as tramps. Associational embracement involves recognizing oneself as a friend or a person who takes his or her social relationships seriously. For instance, JJ and Indio were ready to protect one another in all situations. Ideology embracement happens when a person adheres to a creed or an alternative reality that agrees with the creed. For example, Banjo is a Christian and believes that wealth means nothing without God.

Fictive storytelling involves narrating fictional stories about the past, present or future experiences and achievements. Embellishment refers to exaggeration of gone or present experiences with fictitious details to have a positive personal identity. For example, a homeless man is said to spend his time hanging around a bar and boasting of having been employed at Harley-Davidson mechanics. Fantasizing happens when the narrator positively frames situations that are connected to his or her past and present. For example, Pat says that if he wins a million dollars in a lottery, he was mature enough to spend it wisely.

During my time in high school, I was performing poorly, and some students started mocking that I was from a wealthy family and had to do better in exams. I was so much discouraged because I was trying my best to better my grades, but my efforts had been futile. I decided to focus on my grades rather than the criticism and started studying diligently. I improved tremendously in my subsequent exams, which left other students amazed.
