The research objective of this paper was to determine the problems of turnover in nursing and the factors attributed to the shortage of nurses in U.S. The hypothesis of this research is high turnover and low levels of nursing school graduates are the causes of nursing shortage problem. The secondary hypothesis of the research is dissatisfaction is the leading causes of turnover by nurses in the health profession.
On the research methodologies, electronic databases such as ProQuest among others were used. It also made use of reputable nursing websites such as American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Healthcare Association among others were used. Research papers, articles and reviews were also included. Additionally, structured interviews with expert professionals with knowledge on issues of nursing shortage were also used.

Some of the research results include aging nurses, patient demographics, insufficient staffing, and lack of experience, nursing school shortages and low salaries and compensations. Aged nursing population will only increase the changing demographic of the population require increase in need for healthcare, and with reduced staffing comes the issue of work stress and higher workload.
The possible solutions to these problems recommended include more training to nurses who seek more education. Web-based training to maintain continuity. Monetary and legislation assistance from both state and federal government will help mitigate these problems too. Monetary incentives by healthcare organizations would also see the number of those willing to further their studies increase.
There were several limitations in the research including possible publication bias in articles and reviews. Shortage of time of examining and number of sources were also an issue. There was also a need to continue researching to keep track of the trends and changes over time.
Nurses’ turnover and nursing shortage has been a drawback in the healthcare system limiting proper to patients in the U.S. This research indicates that these problems have various facts that contribute to the overall problem in healthcare. A continued research is important to keep track of these problems and find a suitable solution.
