According to Singh and Shi (2019), the United States spent approximately 17% of its GDP as of 2016 on healthcare, making it rank first in the world as the biggest spender on healthcare. However, despite expansion of health insurance, many people still experience barriers to quality care. Singh and Shi (2019) indicate that there has always existed a gap between the life expectancy at birth for whites and blacks throughout the years, and there is no indication that the gap could close soon. Although these groups live in the same country, it is intriguing to observe the remarkable differences in access to quality healthcare. The white majority group shows better healthcare outcomes on numerous health parameters, while minority groups show poor healthcare outcomes on the same parameters. The purpose of this research will be to understand the causes of the healthcare disparities between the white majority groups and the minority groups, and to propose recommendations to address these disparities.
