The Watergate scandal happened one early morning of June 17, 1972, when some burglars got arrested in operation in the office of the Democratic National Committee that was based in Watergate complex building located in Washington. Watergate that gained popularity in the incident eventually brought down the president Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign, since he had told a lie regarding being involved in the burglary. The effects of the incident were so huge that similar occurrences around the globe are dubbed “gates.”
Creep activities that were there ranged from unethical to illegal, and that included wiretapping, money laundering, and harassment of some activist groups. Even with Nixon being directly linked to the incidence he categorically denied being involved in any way. However, the CIA would later put an end to the FBI inquiry. Watergate is described as the worst scandal in American history since it was an attempt to subvert the American political process. Establishment of the campaign finance reforms was introduced for the reason of reducing and minimize the risk of future legal misconduct; however, the real damage was on a cultural level. The United States was left divided into disillusioned, defeated and bitter conservatives and some other mistrustful, alienated and confrontational liberals.

Investigations to the matter turned out to be good, and the incidence was resolved amicably. However, this was after a prolonged investigation that took a lot of time. The remaining legacy of Watergate is now considered a political polarization of the United States Republicans and Democrats that soon started drifting away from each other sharply from the beginning of the scandal, and the same rift continues to grow as time passes by.
