Generally, the practice of nursing has an effect on the societal as well as human needs. The field must always consider issues and the social factors that shape and constrain health behaviors. Nursing practice is a wide field that is beneficial to society (Donnelly, 2009). Examples of theories that are used by nurses include critical social theory, chaos theory, system theory, and feminist theory. In the case provide for this assignment, we are confronted with a situation where senior nurses interact with a junior nurse by the name Natalie Kazakova. Susan and Pam are the two nurses who seem to be at loggerhead with Natalie. Natalie recently obtained masters in nursing, while Susan and Pam have ADN with ten years’ experience.
Analyzing this case using role behavior theory, Natalie needs to manage her work well because she is expected to do so. As a new nurse with little experience, she should appreciate her fellow workers in the institution. She should recognize that there is a need, as a new graduate, to negotiate role behaviors with everyone she comes across within the facility. She is almost giving up, but she has to realize that her role is more important that distractive behavior so she should continue to work, and with time, she will gain experiences like Pam and Susan. For example, medical staff, co-workers, and patients. She has to negotiate appropriate role behaviors with her fellow workers including the patients and focus on delivering the best services in order to avoid stress and incongruity which can happen when one fails to meet individual’s expectations. Her goal is to accomplish her caring role of a nurse, and nothing should stop her, not even Susan and Pam.

Conflict or chaos theory is grounded on issues of authority (McEwen & Wills, 2014). There are signs of conflicts between Natalie and the two nurses because the two feel intimidated working with Natalie, who is more qualified than them. Natalie feels hopeless because she seemingly lacks the experience that others have. Susan and Pam are trying to intimidate using their power in their experience because they feel inferior and threatened before Natalie and her advanced degree. Conflicts are normal in a situation like this, and Natalie should understand that challenges like those exist, but they are supposed to make her grow and not to break her will. She is in conflict within her mind as she asks herself why she left her former career in engineering. She questions whether she made the wrong choice by changing her career. The solution is for the two nurses to assist her in growing her experience, and appreciate them as her seniors. She should also accept that she is a junior nurse willing to be coached and mentored.
In terms of social exchange theory, Natalie feels that there is no mutual benefit between her and the two nurses. She now wants to resign. This is not the best thing to do because Natalie knows very well that she is well trained and able to do her job well, and if so, she needs to maintain her relationship with her clients, and link that relationship with client outcomes. Social exchange theory is useful when trying to understand the client-nurse interaction in the context of evidence-based practices (McEwen & Wills, 2014). She may not achieve this without assistance from her colleagues. Therefore, it will be ethical for her to engage them and offer her assistance on the basis of her competency while the other nurses should reciprocate by guiding her to gain experience. This is how to grow together, especially for the benefit of the patients. Natalie’s professor advised her well that she needs time to grow and that whatever she goes through is normal, but with time, it will fade as she gains more and more experience.
Nurses are there to help improve the quality of lives among people. Their expectations include delivering the best health care services. Nurses’ growth happens in many ways, which include training and learning from experiences. Natalie is more competent due to her advanced qualifications, although her experiences make her a novice who needs more help to grow. The two nurses are supposed to appreciate Natalie and offer to assist her in growing her experience rather than intimidating her on the basis of her inexperience. When helping others, it is important to know that the ultimate goal is not to outweigh others’ achievements but rather to help humanity live a quality life.
