The purpose of the story is informing the public on the sentencing of the couple over the murder of their son. The story is on the manner in which a three year old boy was killed by his father. According to investigations, the boy died from injuries incurred after his father shook and drowned him while his mother watched. The crime is perceived as huge since the author speaks of the injuries sustained by the victim as “catastrophic.” The CT scan shows how intense the crime was (Morris, 2018). The victim was badly injured and by people who are supposed to protect him. The judge also states that even though both parents knew what they had done was wrong, none of them wanted to open up as he read their sentence. The article made me angry since the convicted individuals seem to have no remorse for their actions. In addition to this, the judge sentenced them to very few years for such a grave crime.

Even though the evidence was overwhelming against them, the convicted couple felt it was better to be silent on their actions (Farrington &Ttofi, 2014). The judge’s perspective had little influence on the gratification that they were found guilty since a 10 year sentence for the murder of your own son was too small. According to the psychological crime theory called psychodynamic theory, the father had a super ego thus felt he needed to exert his power on his wife and son. According to the story, he had injured his wife in other circumstances before. He felt that it was necessary to have control, a fete he expressed his power through acts like hitting and drowning his son which finally resulted in his son’s death (“Control Theories of Crime and Delinquency”, 2017). On the other hand, the mother’s crime can be attributed to the strain theory because she had been a victim so long that she felt no need to report the crime even as she watched it happen due to fear.

The second story is on the murder by suspected gang members of a man just outside his own home three years. The investigations are ongoing and the victim’s friend was arrested in connection to the murder (Halliday, 2018). The murder caused repercussions as the rival gangs in the region began to retaliate for the murder in a tit-for-tat battle. The purpose of the article is to inform on the status of the case since this is the first development since the murder over three years ago.

The crime is portrayed as an accident since the victim was murdered by a machine gun. Furthermore the murder has helped expose more of the gang life in the region that has put spotlight on their activities and the police are able to look more closely at the lives of those around the victim to help identify the murderer. The first reaction I got towards the news article was relief that after such a long time, the police was able to come up with a suspect list that seems realistic and they all seem to have a connection to the murder. The criminal behavior in this article piece can be related to sociological theories since the people seem to lack equal opportunities and have an environment for crime causation (Whiteley, 2013). According to the second theory of psychological perspectives, the victim’s attacker seems to have development issues as they developed in an environment with a spike in criminality thus their personality defects leading to the murder of the victim.
