There are various reasons why people drive cars with stickers or wear T-shirts printed with comments on social or cultural issues or drive cars with stickers sending similar messages. In the college, I came across a college bus at the bus park with a sticker printed “This is a Corruption Free Zone” One of the main function of education is to persistently teach the young generation the ways to conduct themselves in the future. Thus, the education system should eliminate all forms of corruption to produce corrupt-free citizens in the future. Besides, corruption in the education sector affects social and economic development by impacting on right to and quality of education.

Evidence has revealed that institutions embracing corruption have low-quality education as well as poor educational outcomes of students. The effects of low-quality education are as a result of the funds that are stolen to ensure well-prepared teachers and students, and low-quality materials used to build the colleges. Thus, it poses a threat to both the students and the institution by developing future citizens with competencies and skills below the expectations for individuals with their educational credentials. The valued resource over which there is a struggle is money. Sometimes, due to economic pressure, irregular, inadequate and delayed salaries together with less funding for institutions usually provide incentives for instructors as well as administrators to seek supplementary income through unethical means.

The dominant culture of corruption is represented by students who may, for example, want to buy their diploma and graduate without attaining the necessary skills required of them to perform their job. Also, corruption can be represented by tutors who receive bribes for the same act. At a higher level, corruption can be carried out by administrators so as to absorb new employees who do not merit for the position declared vacant or when carrying out procurement. The individual perceived or identified as the powerful in the society are parents, students, teachers, and top-level management who must have the ownership of the institution to achieve transparency and accountability in the education system. A sense of ownership of all the relevant parties involved increases the opportunity that the institution will be held accountable for educational outcomes.

The individuals perceived as oppressed in the society are the ones or citizens to be served by these students once they are out of school. For example, you can imagine a student who buys her nursing diploma and graduates without the necessary skills, gets employed in a health facility to attend to a patient. The outcome could be detrimental or even lead to death! Corruption in education leads to low-quality education; thus, threatening the society by developing individuals with inadequate competencies and skills to perform their duty.

The first meaning of “This Is a Corruption Free Zone” denotes that it is a place where anyone can practice corruption freely without any interference. Also, it is a zone within which corruption is acceptable. I subscribe to the second meaning “a zone within which corruption is acceptable” because it is sensible that if zones, where corruption is unacceptable exist then zones where corruption is acceptable, must exist. My belief of the driver of the college bus is that he is among the people who have failed to create the systems to address corruption rather standing behind corruption. If the college driver were present, my interaction with him could be to establish an ethical code of conducts and have mechanisms in place to address corruption issues in the institution rather than hiding behind printed stickers. We want strict actions on the culprits and not slogans. By coming up with stringent measures, no one will dare think of corruption.

In conclusion, accountability of institutions and people exists when their professional obligations are subject to another’s direction, oversight, and request that they must provide information and justification for their actions. Therefore, there is a need for high-level accountability and transparency to help reduce chances of corruption.
