The story of feral children came as a surprise to me noting that prior to watching the documentary, I had heard of feral children. The story featuring feral children such as Victor, Oxana, and Genie has worked to spark my interest in understanding feral children and the role that family plays in the development of children.
Most notably, the process of socialization and the impact it has on developing children strikes me as rather surprising. However, after watching the documentary, it has dawned to me that socialization is a critical aspect of human life. The documentary has revealed that indeed our lives are influenced by the roles that family, peers, and school plays. The argument can be supported by Victor’s story. When Gaspard Itard, a French scientist made took Victor in to make observations on him, he worked to show that socialization is influential to our behavior and lifestyle. Since Victor had all along lived in the forest, he had not had an experience of interacting with human beings thus rendering his behavior similar to wild animals that he had loved with.

Another striking feature of socialization is the impact that it has on the learning process. The three feral children used in the documentary showed considerable learning in terms of sounds perception and feelings such as empathy. In addition, the documentary proves that speaking is a factor of the socialization process mainly at the early ages of child development. Despite Victor learning how to perceive sounds and having feelings, he could not speak. In addition, Genie also proves the impact of socialization in learning how to speak noting that she was excellent in conveying messages and vocabulary but could not construct sentences that are grammatically correct. The assignment has helped me develop new insights. The documentary has helped me appreciate the impact of socialization on the learning process, individual behavior, and that the social forces’ hidden hands guide our lives even beyond our control.
