The refugee issue is a significant area of debate in the USA with constant friction between the two dominant groups-the Republicans, and the Democrats. The friction is on their view on whether to accept refugees or not, especially those from Syria and other Muslim countries. This issue escalated further after the current president, Donald Trump, banned the entry of refugees from several predominantly Muslim countries in early 2017. Everyone is either for or against the acceptance of refugees. A large number of Republicans are against their approval into the USA. They believe that accepting refugees, mainly from Muslim countries, is a compromise to national security. They also blame the reduction of job opportunities, wages and increased terrorism on illegal immigration. The number of anti-refugee supporters increased further after the deadly terrorist attack in Paris in 2015 that was executed by a Muslim.

On the other hand, a considerable fraction of the Democrats support the acceptance of refugees since they believe that most of them are children and women who flee their countries in such of safety and other necessities. They feel most refugees are genuine and not associated with terrorist groups. The claim is supported by the existence of several refugees who have become prominent activists and renowned people in the US. The success is attributed to the former president who made it possible for the issuance of temporary status to thousands of refugees that allowed them to study, work and give back to the society.

It is evident that both parties live in parallel universes on the subject of refugees. Nevertheless, they have significant reasons for their respective stands. I feel refugees should be accepted into the US for they are also human. However, this should only happen after undergoing extensive background checks and continuous monitoring to ensure that they have no links to terrorism.
