The story "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien is a narration of a journey of a group of soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War. The author describes items carried by these soldiers. Some of the items are tangible, while others are intangible. Even though most items express by O'Brien are required by soldiers for survival, the emotional burden is the main focus of the story. The author highlights the memories and fear endured during this war by connecting the experience all centered on the war (O'brien, 2009). The tome is non-judgment and intimate as he describes violent incidents he and other soldiers experienced as he recalls vividly how these incidents affected him. 

O'Brien avoids sharing strong emotions to allow the audience to resonate with the events. The author creates a sense of understanding to the audience giving the audience the privilege to experience the events from his perspective. His tone toward the main character Tim is both passionate and regretful as he describes the painful choices Tim had to make regarding this war (O'brien, 2009). The story portrays a sense of inquiry as he ukase questions about the nature of war and what the soldiers had to endure.

The author explores the harsh realities of war to communicate to a broader audience about the events in Vietnam he uses imagery and dialogue to make the story realists .as he narrates the story, the protagonist is more of a fiction that represent reality. The story the things they carried is more of a memoir. The author uses non-judgmental tone and imagery to bring the story to life and engage the audience to question the facts behind the events.
