Successful leaders have unique traits that put them above the rest. Firstly, a successful leader should be adaptive to different situations. A successful leader can adjust his or her style to fit the development level of the followers that he or she is trying to influence (Institute of Healthcare Improvement- IHI, 2013). For instance, in times of emergency in the hospital, the leader should be authoritative and has to direct subordinates by working from the frontline. Secondly, successful leaders should be authentic. This implies that they should be aware of their limitations, emotions, and strengths. Besides, an authentic leader should make effective decisions and abide by them (IHI Open School, 2015). For instance, authentic leadership can be depicted when an outbreak occurs in a hospital. In this case, the leader is able to inspire and encourage other medical professionals to work together and ensure that the affected patients are properly attended and treated to their satisfaction. Lastly, a successful leader should be socially intelligent; that is, he or she should be able to interact with fellow workers formally and motivate them to enhance their productivity ( Goleman & Boyatzis, 2008). An example of a leader with this trait is one that smiles and tells the nurses that everything will be fine when there is a serious emergency case in the hospital. This encourages them and dismisses any fear for them, hence, ensuring they do an excellent job.

Student 1: Alicia

I agree with Alicia that the three traits of a successful leader include being focused, transparent, and person-centered. A person-centered leader is one that is able to focus on the individual strengths and weaknesses of his followers to achieve the organizational objectives. On the other hand, a transparent and focused leader also earns trust and loyalty from the employees, hence, enabling increased productivity.

Student 2: Rosalee

I agree with Rosalee that a successful leader is a motivator and also highly adaptive to different situations. Leaders should motivate their employees to achieve desirable goals. Consequently, leaders should promote openness and must adjust themselves to fit with the employees working with him, as well as the conditions of the job.
