In a health care organization nurses are privileged in transcultural nursing as they provide caring services in respect to people’s culture. A nurse goes under various stages of development to gain competency. First is the gaining of knowledge whereby a nurse becomes well conversant with the cultural base of the clients in a particular service area, for example, view of medication in certain ethnic groups. Then it is the awareness of norms or rules of certain groups, for instance, communication patterns. Next, a skill set where a nurse can help a patient in explaining care by translating words. Finally is embracing social or economic sensitivity of patients by respecting and building trust with the patients (Garneau et al., 2015). The paper develops a discussion on Cultural competent nursing, in facilitating appropriate patient care.
Development of Cultural competency is affected by various opportunities which mean it is a continuous process. I believe I can develop more in showing empathy as it is a required quality to adopt cultural competency by helping nurses deal with problems from a cultural perspective. I also need to advance my level raising awareness and advocacy for cultural difference. For example for a nurse to project a care plan he or she needs to know the cultural difference to comply to cultural requirements of the patient (Giger, 2016). I also need to engage more in cultural assessment. By performing a cultural assessment, a nurse can develop cultural competency, by gaining information from patients. For instance, pain may be stoic in some cultures, so by finding the appropriate method to intervene, nurses are expected to identify culture or beliefs of the patient hence the improvement of cultural competency (Ray, 2016).

I have been able to satisfy the cultural needs of patients, for example, by assessing certain health variables to provide a diagnostic tool for transcultural care. These diagnostic tools are often sensitive to the cultural differences that are present in patients. With the cultural experience I am aware of my traits and contribution to cultural knowledge which may include the ability to better the therapeutic environment by effecting communication with the patients.
