The problem that you identified in your selected organization

The US health care system is currently experiencing the challenge of quality crisis as evidenced in John Hopkins Hospital, and nurses must be ready to tackle it. The quality issue is responsible for the increased number of fatalities in America due to medical errors. For example, many patients die annually due to poor quality services directed to counter breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, or other chronic illnesses (Meyer & O'Brien-Pallas, 2010). Therefore, effective nurse leaders try to solve the problem based on the perspective of closed and open systems theory.

The problem from a closed-system perspective

Despite the existence of a systems-based practice in US health care, professionals are still incompetent in offering safe and high-quality care. This is because of internal interactions within the system without considering the relationship between the patients and the system itself. There is a rigid boundary that does not facilitate information flow; hence, using the system to improve patient quality and safety remains a problem (Meyer & O'Brien-Pallas, 2010). The US health care system cannot effectively utilize the environment to aid in the gradual restoration of the patients’ health; hence, entropy.

How the problem could be addressed by viewing it from an open-system perspective

The problem of substandard quality of healthcare services can be solved. For example, physicians can obtain resources from the hospital’s immediate environment to ensure patient care, gain enormous medical knowledge, improve their communications skills and eventually deliver top-notch medical care. Basically, obtaining the right information from the health setting environment and ultimate delivery of high-quality care implies success in the long run (Glennister, n.d). The physicians must collaborate with community members to understand the relationship between systems and outcomes to improve quality and value.

How this modification would help you and others improve health care outcomes

The transition from closed to open systems view of organizations will promote more effective problem solving since professionals will understand the “big picture”. Consequently, there will be more effective leadership whereby professionals will understand the organizational structures and dynamics; hence following the right direction (Johnson, Miller & Horowitz, n.d). Therefore, the open system promotes effective communication, planning, and adhering to the correct design of projects, products, and services.
