Generally speaking, the delivery of quality care for hospital patients is complicated and needs combined efforts of many healthcare personnel. Healthcare professionals, usually supply personalized services of healthcare. Until recently, there has been an insufficient supply of nurses in various hospitals. In other words, many hospitals globally are struggling with the shortage of nurses which has become an acute stressor for such organizations. It is a universal challenge, impacting many countries around the globe. Patients are suffering as a result of the nursing shortage since healthcare professionals are not adequately prepared to deal with their health needs (Littlejohn, Campbell, & Collins-Mcneil, 2012).
In the past, many healthcare professionals approached issues using a closed system perspective. Ideally, a closed system is a system that utilizes an organization’s internal factors to influence its decisions. From this perspective, the shortage of nurses has arisen primarily because of internal organizational processes and dynamics, such as hospital policies and culture, which have consequently affected individual and group behaviors (Cordon, 2013).

Ideally, the problem of nurse shortage could be addressed by seeing it from an open-systems perspective. An open system frequently exchanges feedback with its external environment. In other words, an open system puts into account external factors in the process of decision-making. Therefore, for hospitals to solve the previously mentioned issue, they need to also consider the external environment such as economic and political factors, as well as advancements in technology (Meyer & O’Brien-Pallas, 2010). For instance, managers can emulate the changes in technology and integrate them into their system. In doing so, this modification will help others and me to improve the outcome of healthcare since we will continually use the feedback from the external environment to solve issues in the organizations such as the shortage of nurses.
To sum up, because of the changes in the external environment that impact organizations, there is a need to change from closed to open systems perspectives in solving organizations’ problems.
