Substance abuse or drug abuse is the unnecessary use of drugs whereby the person using the drugs uses them in a way that it is harmful to the individual and also to the society (Lowinson & Ruiz, 2005). Youths are the most people affected by substance abuse which is caused by peer pressure, idleness, stress, and unemployment where a person has nothing of important to do and to pass the time they end up involved in the use of deadly drugs. According to Johnston et al. (2011), drug abuse is one of the severe and dangerous problems affecting nations globally; drug users are critical to contracting infections as they use the drugs reckless without even caring for their lives. Apart from risking their health drug users also develop high-risk behavior due to the use of drugs and this may lead them to hurt themselves, their families, friends, people around them and even strangers and this is a threat to many (Barker, 2003). Nurses should come up a method on how to stop and prevent drug abuse; they should see drug abuse as a disease just like other diseases and work hard to cure it as this will help in the fight against drug addiction.
Substance use can be reduced or prevented by letting those involved and those not involved know that drug addiction only puts their lives and that of their loved ones at risk and that alcohol and substance abuse does not cause any positive impact in their life (Evans & Sullivan, 2001). Encouragements also should be offered to the victims to help them reduce or stop substance use. Nurses with the help of national government should develop programs all over the country which will be aimed at educating people more so the young adults on the effects of drug and alcohol abuse and how one can be successful without the use of substance. Youths who have recovered from drug addiction should be used to educate the others on the effects since the person was there was this can help to change many because of the motivation from one who belonged to them. According to Ringwait (2002), schools should also teach drug abuse as subject as this will help in preventing alcohol abuse since when children are taught the effects, they will not dare involve themselves in such acts fearing its effects.
