Underlying themes and concepts in ethics

Ethics, as a discipline, encompasses the principles that govern the behavior of people as well as organizations. In this view, virtue, and morality stand out as the basic concepts and themes of ethics. Virtue can be defined as the show of moral standards while morality can be viewed as the distinction between what is evil and good behavior ( Sennett, 2018). The concepts of virtue and morality are significant in ethics since they help individuals to determine what is wrong from what is right and find solutions in ethical dilemmas. The concepts of selflessness, fairness, health, and utilitarianism form part of the themes that unite an individual’s virtue and morality in addition to the personal goals, emotions, and beliefs (White, 2019) .

Application of ethical theories

The ethical theory utilitarianism can be applied in allowing municipal governments to employ the use of public funds in building stadia for professional sports teams ( Elfstrom, 2018) . Making such a move will result in benefits to society. In this theory, an argument is held that if several choices are provided, human beings will choose the one that will yield the most benefits to the affected people ( Mill, 2018) . Therefore, the decision to use public funds to build stadia for professional sports teams would yield revenue, job opportunities, and improved business opportunities. On the other hand, if a choice of not using the public funds to build the stadiums can be argued based on the stadiums' building costs, the potential of increasing crime rates as well as other social vices, and the possible increase in traffic around the area.
