Violence against women has been an inherent issue that is, unfortunately, happening in the twenty-first century despite the high level of civilization. Sadly, rape cases are also on the rise affecting both women and men. In understanding gendered violence in ‘the ultimate rape victim by Jane Doe,’ Jackson Katz wrote about ’10 things men can do to prevent gender violence.’ Katz insists that gender violence is a men’s issue and that they are responsible for ending the vice. Men in the society are also expected to report all gender violence cases they will come across, offer the rape victims support, stop the act, and have the courage to take control of the situation.

Katz emphasizes that men have the responsibility of righting their wrong to address the matter comprehensively. The author argues that men must deal with their ego and patriarchic notions and start respecting women. Furthermore, men can also reach out to their fellow men who engage in gender violence and warn them against the vice since they can easily understand each other better. Men can also start acting as role models to each other by leading lives that disrespect women in any way. Katz encourages men to pledge to remain violence-free as they condemn gendered violence.

Katz also advises men to remain vocal about the issue of gendered violence. Men should never remain silent whenever they witness or learn about men who abuse women. One should never walk out of a couple that is fighting without doing anything to stop the act. Moreover, the author advises men to be courageous regarding changing their attitudes and abstaining from words or actions that would lead to violence or sexism. Katz also urges men to have the courage to solve their marital issues amicably with their spouses or women instead of resolving to violence.

Most people do not understand what to do when they encounter a couple of fighting. Katz encourages one to offer support to victims of gender violence or sexual assault immediately. For instance, one could first stop the fight or a rapist from harming the lady by may be pushing the man aside. The next step would be to give emotional support to the lady by maybe hugging them tightly to help them recover from the shock. Calling for help from the neighbors, police, and ambulance is also another form of support to offer the victims of rape and gender violence.

In case men realize their fault in the awful act, they should stop immediately, apologize to the lady and even seek professional help from a psychiatrist to handle their emotions. Both men and women should offer support to battered women through available channels and services. For instance, men could attend programs, rallies and public events that condemn gender violence and sexual assaults in the society. Men can also contribute funds to support anti-gender violence programs which give the victims both emotional and financial support to manage life after the assaults.

Reporting an assault is always a challenge for most victims of sexual and violent assaults and Katz encourages people to take a leadership role and educate themselves on the subject matter. Leadership requires one to mentor boys and other men on respecting women more and refraining from sexist discussions and behavior. Men should also protest sexism openly even in social media in the effort of stopping gendered violence. Refusing to participate in gay bashing, gender discrimination, and homophobia debates or activities would also help men end gendered violence.

Sexual and violent assaults against women in society today are condemned in the strongest terms possible, and Katz argues that men have more roles in stopping the vices since they are the ones responsible. Above all, much support should be given to the victims of gendered violence including professional help even for the offender. In reading ’10 Things men can do to prevent gender violence’ by Katz, one must ponder on some questions. The reading is important for the class to understand issues around gendered violence from the perspective of men to find solutions.
