When a project is terminated in a natural way it means that the project went smoothly and its goals were achieved. On the other hand, unnatural termination is when a project is stopped on account of economic, technological, political conditions or the client losing interest in the project. According to Pinto (2016), there are four main ways in which a project is terminated, these include; termination by extinction, terminations by integration, termination by addition and termination by starvation. In all these cases, the project could be terminated naturally or unnaturally. The natural termination process allows the team to properly hand over vital information; it also makes the team hope for an upcoming project due to having a successful one. The natural termination process has multiple processes that should be conducted in a specific fashion to ensure that the project is completed correctly and the team is disbanded well. Whilst the unnatural termination may have to follow certain processes, it does not fully encompass everything that is vital. Once the customer is pleased and accepting of the project is gives the team a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, natural termination will not only give the team a sense of achievement but also try to ensure the customer is happy.
Depending on the type of termination, different challenges and issues are likely to arise. According to Study Lib (N.D), some of the internal problems that arise from an unnatural termination are the disposal of material that is not used and the inability to effectively screen tasks that are only partially done. The external issues would include agreeing with the client what happens to the commitments that are outstanding and the closure of facilities. Another challenge that will come up as a result of unnatural termination is project team demotivation and fear of the likelihood of getting more work and reassignment. Also, the customer may want to not be associated with the project team, which could result in them not wanting to do more work with the project team. According to Pinto (2016), termination by addition, although beneficial and done in a natural way can cause worry to the team because there may be fears that the team will be disbanded causing some team members to no longer be useful to the project. Also, natural termination of a project also brings about worries of getting reassigned.
