Conceived in the late 1920s, the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) program was designed to help in the generation of information reliable enough for use by the law enforcement agencies in accessing the crime levels across the United States (Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), n.d. a). Ever since its inauguration, the program has proven significant in the law enforcement sector, offering valuable information to criminal justice students, researchers, and media members, among others.

Crime rates in the United States tend to be high, depending on the state. Crimes are of different kinds, i.e., murder, robbery, extortion, and hate crimes, among others. While some states have high crime rates on robbery, others have high child exploitation and others in murder, thereby recording higher rates in related crimes than other states.

New Mexico, just like other states, records crime rates, some common in the state and others uncommon. For instance, according to the 2015 Crime in the United States Federal Crime Data, different kinds of crimes have occurred all through the US with numerous arrests throughout the country. In some crimes, like fraud, New Mexico never featured, and in the ones that it was featured on, it recorded either 1 or 0 arrests (FBI, 2015). All the same, some offenders might have managed to escape and thus the reason for the low number of criminal activities in New Mexico.

On analysis, New Mexico crime data tends to be derived from two bodies; these are the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the Summary Reporting System. The estimated crime rates across New Mexico in 2018 were as a result of the different law enforcement agencies in the state. Fresh and updated data from the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) with data from 2008 – 2018 provided valuable insights in determining the crime rates in New Mexico (FBI, n.d. a). Violent crime rates over eight years increased to a high level, unlike never before.
