Purpose of the Declaration of Human Rights? Is it effective?
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a document consisting of thirty well-defined articles that affirm individual rights. The document itself was adopted by the United Nation’s Assembly in the year 1948. It is believed that enacting the UDHR aimed at developing International Bill of Human Rights adopted in 1966. The UDHR doctrine is effective in defining all human rights through a series of articles.

Articles that stand out include: Article 4 which states that no one should be held against their will in slavery and all forms of slave trade should be banished and Article five which states that no human should be subjected to torture or inhumane treatment for any reason whatsoever. The articles stand out to me since they hinge on equality of human beings. Slavery and servitude degrade human beings; masters who own the slaves are seen as superior. In terms of torturing, the victim is seen as inferior while the person perpetrating the torture is superior. The two articles equalize every human being such that no one is superior to the other.

The above two articles coincide well with the ethical principle of nonmaleficence which explains that human interactions should not cause harm to others either psychologically, physically or emotionally. Slavery and torture are instruments that inflict harm to individuals in all the above-mentioned ways.

The judiciary system was known for torturing criminals in the past to extract crucial information. Although the system is not adopted by today’s standards, there is reason to believe that it is practiced in some countries on a small scale. Russia, for instance, had a wide array of torture cases in its prison system during the year 2018 alone. Criminal gangs and activists are also known to torture people from time.
Slavery is also apparent in cases where individuals are employed but are paid relatively small wages compared to the amount of work done. Instances of such mistreatment in terms of employment are common as per today’s standards.
