Technology, especially in education, is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and engaging appropriate technological processes and resources (Simpson, 2011). Nursing education forms a significant part of the overall education system in any country. Nurses play a fundamental role in the society, and the profession employs many men and women. Nursing education involves clinical rotations and simulations all with the aim of developing care planning and clinical reasoning at the workplace.

In nursing education, modern technology and informatics are increasing exponentially over the years. Unlike in the past where the role of informatics has been undervalued, we are in a time where computer literacy and informatics is integrated into the nursing curriculum (Billings & Halstead, 2015). All nursing students should be able to know the proper way of using new technological devices since sophisticated health records have a high potential to improve healthcare.

Relevance and motivation are closely linked; the time taken to learn would be cut by a fraction of the time currently allotted if the learner perceived the materials for learning as related to its purpose. Technological devices can convey information by sound video or images (Simpson, 2011). The most instrumental technology application include the smartphones and iPads which can store many electronic books, provide applications that aid in learning, and are more portable and reliable to any user. The smartphones and iPads also enable learners to participate in video conferencing which is a great achievement in nursing education (Simpson, 2011).

The smartphone is one of the technological devices that have expanded functions and greater internet access. Learners in nursing can use this device to reinforce learning at any time or location. They provide quick access to educational material, guidelines for clinical practices, class lectures and conferencing. Subscription to educational services, downloadable applications, and reference material, text messages to the clinical instructors and instructional videos expand the smartphone’s education function even further (Billings & Halstead, 2015). In conclusion, information and technology are rapidly becoming part of our everyday lives. Nurses, therefore, should take the leadership role in the use of technology to revolutionize patient care.
