Epidemiology is concerned with incidences and causes of health states and their control. It analyses incidences in a population and relates individual features to their environment. Therefore, epidemiology informs decisions relating to diagnosis. For instance, epidemiology selects a population affected by challenges of a disease and offers relevant information on possible prevention ways. However, contrasting information may be given to a population whose incidences of occurrence are minimal. Patients may get different information concerning risks of disease prompting epidemiology to give relevant advice (Stram, 2014).

Epidemiology provides information on optimization of care services, interventions and understanding the importance of symptoms and conditions of a disease to clinical decisions in relation to patients seen and the total population for practitioners. Epidemiology describes the commonness and recurrence of the signs of defined diseases in a community. The diversity of problems based on gender; age and location are also presented. This helps in understanding the clinical patterns and the significant symptoms of incidences. However, some signs in a community may be dealt with without healthcare assistance (Stram, 2014).

It helps the government in its strive to provide equitable and efficient healthcare services by providing information regarding care services. This is done basing on the type of technology used, population and the personnel required. Hence, changes in the healthcare are observed and may influence disease epidemiology in the society. In its value to the community health nursing, epidemiology may be challenged by the methods of case identification measures to be used and issues relating to data collection and protection, inadequate funding and reduced expertise.

Epidemiologic data collected is used by nurses to ascertain health status of patients areas and develop ways of recovery. Nurses elicit patients’ early illnesses and family health patterns and exposure to chemical hazards. A problem is identified through diagnosis and interventions made relating to the problem. Implementations and evaluation are made to establish good health and effective ways of dealing with such situations in future. Epidemiology presents great value to community health nursing since it relies on it in attempt to carry out the nursing process as its data is greatly relevant (Stram, 2014).
