The cold war in Vietnam was between the United States of America and the Soviet Union. The US adopted the “containment” policy which was aimed at preventing the spread of communism to the neighboring states. US feared that if one country gets ruled by communists, it would spread to other states and eventually get to its states. This cold war affected Vietnam in many ways. The war led to massive deaths of Vietnamese citizens and fighters, while some became refugees (Civil War Casualties, 2020). The country’s infrastructure, economy, agriculture, industries and businesses were destroyed by the heavy bombing during the war. Democracy was not successful in Vietnam because the policy used by the US failed. The country became a one party communist state after the US surrendered from the war.
The Vietnamese citizens lost their civil liberties. They lacked freedom of speech, association and peaceful public gatherings (World Report: Rights Trends in Vietnam, 2019). The government controls all the media platforms. Formation of independent political associations, human rights organizations and political associations is prohibited in Vietnam. Serious consequences and harassment face those who break these laws. The nation’s political system has not changed since the cold war because civil liberties are still being restricted in the country.
