Q1: Type of Deviance and What the Film Communicates About It

Taken 3 is a film that features crime as the main type of deviance. For example, Bryan Mills, the main character, has his wife killed by people he did not know. The police come after him, wanting to arrest him because they suspected his involvement in the crime. However, Mills manages to flee, running into a series of crimes that involve killing people to avenge his wife and protect his daughter. In addition, the film depicts the innovation type of deviance, which refers to a condition in which people agree with the goals of the society, but do not accept the means of attaining such goals. For instance, Mills understands that it is unlawful for someone to kill another person, but refuses to accept the means of attaining justice. For this reason, he feels that defying the morally acceptable method of obtaining justice through crime would solve his problems. The film appears to celebrate the two type of deviance. For instance, Mills manages to avoid the police for most of the time. In fact, despite all police and investigative units of the nation going after him, he manages to confuse them and continue with his mission. Therefore, the film communicates that justice has other means of being achieved apart from the mainstream legal system. In fact, according to the film, deviance helps to solve problems faster, better, and in a more gratifying manner than does the mainstream approach.

Q2: Film and Social Norms

The film appears to challenge the social norms. For example, while it is understood that people should seek legal help when they are confronted by problems, the film indicates that people might have a better way of attaining such justice. Mills undertakes to kill the people he suspects of having killed his wife in cold blood. He defies the fact that the police could be better investigators, and the director of the film emphasizes this idea by letting the police follow him blindly trying to track him down, doing so unsecessfully. In addition, the police appear to be unconcerned by Mills’ situation since they think that he was responsible for the murder. Therefore, according to the film deviance should be embraced by society.

Q3: Strategy of Solving the Deviant Character

The rehabilitation approach to solving deviance should be the most appropriate way of dealing with the deviance behavior in the film. This approach considers that people who depict the deviant behavior are also humans and do so because of what they believe is right for them (Erikson, 2003). Therefore, rehabilitation would solve the deviance through allowing and convincing the affected people to adopt characters that conform to the societal norms. For this case, Bryan Mills should be made to understand that the consequence of his character has the potential of affecting more people than it should have done.

Q4: Counsellors Perspective of Why People Engage in Deviant Character

The people who engage in deviant behavior do so because of desperation to assert their authority over others. For instance, Mills wants to protect his daughter and justify to her that it was only unfortunate that he had lost his wife. The desperation drives him into inviting the police to go after him when he on a phone call with the police says that he was on a mission to defend the only thing he had been left with. According to him, he was responsible for all the misfortunes that had befallen his wife, and he was charged with mending them.
