Ethics is simply standards set on how people should behave. Ethics help us understand what is legal and what is moral. People with ethical conduct are known to be reliable, unbiased and honorable. Ethics plays an important role in interviewing, hiring, incentivizing, promoting and firing employees.

The safety of an interviewee is important during an interview. The interview should provide a safe location for the interview to take place. Procedures should be well explained to the interviewee before the interview; preferably in writing. Confidentiality of the interviewee is of crucial concern. Notes taken or recorded during an interview should be used in agreement with the desires of the interviewee. During the hiring process, the choosing of applicants should be judged on merits alone. Discrimination made on the basis of race, tribe, age or religion against the applicant is not encouraged. It is the employer’s responsibility to choose the right applicant with necessary skills, qualifications and competence for the benefit of the company.

Top management tends to be paid more incentives compared to other staffs. This may happen when the employer fears losing outstanding executives, hence the higher incentives. Some of the ethical problems involving incentives are negative effects encountered by the employer to prove he/she deserve the incentive, scheming incentive programs and unfair distribution of the incentives among the employers. Great work performance should be a key consideration when promoting employees. This performance should be evidence-based. Employees who have served the longest in accompany should be regarded during a promotion ( Brusseau, 2019) . Misbehavior by the employee, e.g. sex harassment, poor work performance and also changes in the market are key issues that may affect firing by employers. However, in some circumstances, the reasons for firing employees should not be disclosed to third parties as it may create a negative future career reputation.
