Information is power and for one to be well-informed research is necessary. Research is the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data in order to make well-informed and meaningful decisions. Through research, one becomes more knowledgeable and able to acquire more skill in their area of expertise. In the field of social work, it is important for one to have the relevant information in order to effectively execute his or her duties. This essay will explain how evidence-based research informs social work practice.

Recent surveys indicate that social workers support Evidence-based Practice (EBP) (Drisko,2012). Research findings help to show social workers how to go about their work and what to change in order to improve. EBP is a process in which practitioners integrate information about a client needs and values with knowledge of research ( Wodarski, & Hopson, 2012 ). Findings from previous researchers, for instance, studies which show that people who come from backgrounds with both parents and had a happy childhood tend to be happier in life helps one to know not to discriminate against those who never experienced happy childhoods. There are other findings which show that more juvenile delinquents come from homes lacking a father-figure. Such findings translate into social works such as counseling whereby such individuals get relevant counseling.

The steps involved in EBP are crucial to a social worker executing their duties. A social worker would be able to critically appraise the evidence and be able to disseminate the evidence correctly ( Wodarski, & Hopson, 2012 ). Lastly there several things which might prevent a social worker from applying research, for instance, the organization policies which might restrict certain levels of indulgence. Also, the amount of experience one has, plays an important.

Conclusion

The EBP method is based on ethical principles which must be adhered to. It is an ideal practice in the execution of social work as the steps it involves asks the relevant questions, search for the best evidence and critically analyzes the given evidence. This will ensure the evidence is well integrated with the social worker’s expertise and thereby give the best solution.
