Evidence based practice in nursing has been cited to provide health services more efficiently and professionally. However, since it is a new approach in the field of healthcare various challenges have arisen affecting its implementation. EBP is an approach that requires a lot of information sources to effectively diagnose and determine the right procedure of treatment as well as medication. Insufficient information such as lack of information necessary for EBP and lack of internet access for online information (Khammarnia et al., 2015) that can help in obtaining evidence to ascertain the conditions becomes barriers to this approach of healthcare system. Nurses are a vital factor in successfully implementing the EBP approach. Unfortunately they also face barriers that prevent the achievement of the goals of EBP. Such barriers include nursing not being considered as an autonomous profession (DeBruyn et al., 2014) and nurses perceiving not to have the necessary authority to make changes in patient care procedures based on EBP approach (Mehrdad et al., 2018).
Changes comes to improve current situations and provide good environments to carry out tasks and provide services. Barriers are expected to be experienced but there will chances of learning the barriers and how to deal with them effectively. EBP barriers can be overcome by involving the necessary stakeholders to ensure that trust is built, provide a chance for them to share their experiences and learn from and provide the necessary input in terms of financing and resources. Administration should provide the necessary support to the staffs to adequately prepare them in dealing with these changes. It should also inform the staffs of other related projects and the approach used to facilitate successful implementation. The administration is key in developing and promoting organizational culture that helps al staffs identifying the roles they play and the authority they hold to make certain changes in patient care procedures.
