Discussion 1

Agreeing with your view, homegrown Jihadists have become a concern to the security of the US. Since the peak of terrorism in 2015, the threat from external jihadists has dramatically reduced. However, the most likely threat to the US is internal terrorists who have contact with ISIS terrorists or are radicalized virtually ( Bergen & Sterman, 2018 ). Besides the effort by the security agencies, the citizenry also has a mandate of helping curb this growing menace. Your proposal on community policing can be an efficient solution that can work to augment efforts by the nation’s security organs. Involving members of the community in surveillance activities in their neighborhoods will be a rich source of information to the police and other covert investigators.

Muslims Americans are the most targeted and prejudiced people in the US when it comes to homegrown terrorism ( Bergen & Sterman, 2018 ). However, one must agree that it is a misconception and wrong to label all Muslim Americans as jihadists. Community policing can help members of the Muslim community to identify the few people among them who are brainwashed by groups such as ISIS ( Schanzer, Kurzman, Toliver & Miller, 2016 ). When community policing takes root in the whole country, it will be possible for law enforcers to act on the provided information, thus frustrating countless heinous acts. Indeed, community policing should be inducted into the American culture.

Discussion 2

Law enforcement officers should not work in isolation, but they should join forces with members of the community to ensure that the country is safe. Analyzing the recent trend from 2015, one agrees that homegrown terrorism is gradually on the rise. Therefore in support of your point of view, information and intelligence from the society can be invaluable to the US security agencies. For example, within a prospective inner social circle, there can be at least one person who can give crucial hints to the police. The officers on their part must be closely associated with the neighborhoods if community policing is to have tangible results. For example, the Muslim community has undeservedly attracted harsh counterterrorism measures ( Aziz, 2014 ). Directing prejudices to a whole community is uncalled for when the reality is that only a few people among them are a threat to the national society. Entrenching community policing throughout the American society will help curb the threat of terrorism ( Schanzer, Kurzman, Toliver & Miller, 2016 ). Terrorism has no specific religion or ethnicity, as evidenced by recent attacks in schools and social places by white Americans. In the current era of technology, a person can become radicalized through social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Therefore, community policing should not only be limited to physical spaces but also should be extended to internet platforms. This, however, is not to say that the privacy of an individual should be breached.
