Water is an essential commodity for the sustainability of life for all living things; may it be human, plants and animals. It falls in the basic needs category which means that a human being cannot survive were there no water. There are two main sources of water, that is, groundwater and surface water. Groundwater is found beneath the surface, while surface water is found on the surface such as streams, lakes, oceans among others. Several company are tasked in supplying water in homes and industries across the United States. Wilton Water & Sewer Authority supplies water in Gansevoort, New York where I work (Environmental Working Group, 2007-2011).
Despite the fact that the water that is supplied is treated, it is not 100% pure. Various impurities which are still present from various contaminants, some of which exceeds health or legal guidelines while others don’t. Among the contaminants exceeding health guidelines is Chloroform. Chloroform is a byproduct that forms when disinfectants such as chlorine are used in the treatment of drinking water. This and other byproducts increases the risk of cancer and problematic during pregnancy. Dibromoacetic acid is also a contaminant found in this utility although in very minimal contents which do not pose any health risks to the population or exceed legal guidelines (Mechenich, et al, 2013). It is among the group of five haloacetic acids regulated by federal standards. It is formed as a byproduct when chlorine or other drinking water disinfectants are used.

In a world where the cancer epidemic has become rampant, the results for the contaminants in my water, makes me feel at risk of acquiring the killer disease. Although it may be hard to for the responsible authorities to supply absolutely contaminant free water, I feel that the government is not doing enough in ensuring that the citizens get clean drinking water. With this information, I am motivated in finding alternative water treating method for me, my family and the community at large (Peter). I would prefer the use of carbon filters in removing contaminants from the drinking water. These filters are affordable to most of the population in the community, whereby the prices vary according to their effectiveness.
In conclusion, it's always advisable to stay safe with consumables which may cause health issues to you. Going an extra mile of using the carbon filters in treating the drinking water can keep one safe from killer diseases such as cancer and others.
