In this case study, it is obvious there is a communication problem between patients and the hospital staff. Rob's information needs to reach different parties for the purpose of monitoring his diabetes level, but the PDA issues have been giving false results. Also, Jillian uses non-effective means of communication to relay a short message to patients and family. In this situation, the hospital is failing on the communication aspect with patients and ensure that the communication process is reviewed to provide better patient experience.
In this case, I would prioritize the patient’s situation first and fix his PDA to ensure doctors receive the correct readings. Health IT is essential in enhancing nurse-patient communication (Ravì et al., 2016). The hospital has neglected its responsibility of assessing whether equipment provided to patients are working. As a result, faulty equipment conveys false information to doctors which put their health at risk, as this situation could lead to misdiagnosis. Jillian, therefore, acted unethically as she should have checked her patient, and also calling the family to alert them on the prevailing situation. Using emails for emergencies can slow down information flow and feedback (Kangasniemi et al., 2015). Tom should go with option 2, where Jillian will be required to take a course on medical ethics and informatics in order to sharpen her knowledge.
