The intermodal transport is useful because it has handled transportation issues both in freight and passenger applications. This paper examines advances in technology in the intermodal transport sector, which include EDI, the internet, RFID and GPS.

In the intermodal transport industry, EDI is used in the management of the flow of information and goods in trade deals through structured data. Documents like customs declarations, container loading plans, lading and manifest bills, and purchase order booking guidelines are transmitted using EDI (Jaffeux & Wieser, 2012). The technology can also be used to transmit data and transfer funds to trace and track containers and cargo.

Compared to EDI systems, the internet together with web technologies is useful in decreasing transaction and start-up expenses (Jaffeux & Wieser, 2012). Internet and web technologies also promote automated identification of contracting and processing, business deals, negotiation, encryption and signing of transmitted contents and create online mechanisms to solve disputes.

Information transmission technologies like RFID and GPS are used to track and trace modes of transport, containers and goods from their origin to their destination (Jaffeux & Wieser, 2012). They reduce chances of losses, allow improved risk management evaluation and enhance accountability. They also ensure that products arrive at their final location in their anticipated state, which is pleasing to stakeholders.

Retailers benefit from these technologies in various ways, for example, web-based tracking and security monitoring enhance the security of products and containers by offering real-time reporting. Besides, the technologies offer real-time monitoring and tracking of goods and containers, which hinders losing track of goods and offers actionable information to recover products or diminish damage. The ability to identify accountability in case of destruction or theft results in low insurance premiums for retailers.

In conclusion, the adoption of technologies like EDI, the internet, RFID, and GPS has led to enhanced efficiency and integrity in the intermodal transport industry.
