A recent report reveals that there are about 2.4 million individuals incarcerated in the American prison system (Regoli, 2019). The large number of individuals in prisons has called for a need to be numerous prisons capable of housing the inmates. The very first for-profit prison was constructed in Tennessee in 1984 with an aim of providing services for the federal government. Six years later, an additional 66 facilities joined the private prison sector in America (Joy, 2018). Privatization has generally concentrated on whole institutions or important parts of a prison populace. However, in the recent past, privatization has applied to the delivery of particular services, such as prison medical services, canteen services, food services, and mental health services (Regoli, 2019). These special services for the prison system have been contracted out to private entities for more than a hundred years. Privatization of prisons is quite distinct from private sectors in prisons, as the latter seek to turn prisoners into productive members of the community (Joy, 2018). They do this by making them toil at a decent wage and manufacture goods or carry out services that can be sold in the marketplace. I would consider privatizing services such as waste collection and disposal, and wastewater utilities because it actually lowers expenses. Competitive delivery of solid waste services more often than not yields cost savings on the order of 20 – 40% (Regoli, 2019). Private organizations holds the economies of scale to broaden investment, are able to procure expenses across numerous facilities and agreements, and safeguard the environment (Joy, 2018). I believe that this aspect of privatization is not distinct from the ethical and legal issues of privatizing a whole facility or an important part of a population (Joy, 2018). For instance, most contract organizations reject the housing of dangerous inmates, thus leaving the normal prisons with the cost and possible hardships of high-risk prisoners.
