How would the world be without a task force to maintain order? Crime rates across the globe keep rising every single day. There are a lot of conflicts and disputes under the sun in the contemporary world. The peaceful existence of human race requires uncommon regulations and policies to guide and oversee interpersonal relationships do not engage in a dispute. Therefore, a special group of professionals is obligated to oversee the maintenance of law and order with an objective of peaceful coexistence among humankind. Police officers are significant people in the societies across the universe. They have a responsibility to maintain law and order. Thus, the character of an individual to serve in any police unit ought to be unquestionable because of the sensitivity of the duties they undertake. Based on this background, this paper discusses the qualities that ideal police officers should have and cite an example of a police officer with exceptional character.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD POLICE OFFICER

Compassion is one of the significant characteristics a police officer should have more precisely during his or her execution of law and order duties. It is an important feature throughout a police officer’s career. In many occasions, police officers are found in most chaotic and tragic situations in the lives of people they serve and protect. They are victims of unspeakable violent crimes and they might lose their loved ones in these crimes. The situations they find themselves are quite tough and require individuals with strong authority and an uncommon sense of compassion. Compassion is a driver as far as solving crime-related problems and thus a necessity for an officer in the police force to be considered good.

Integrity is another essential feature that a police officer must pose to be considered good. Integrity and ethical considerations are married to each other thus, intertwined. An ethical upright police officer is expected to maintain a high degree of integrity. It is undoubtedly clear on the sensitivity of the matters police officer handle on a daily basis. Some of crimes and law enforcement provisions can be compromised depending on the legality and ethical morality of the officer handling them. However, colleges training police officers to sensitive them on ethical expectations including integrity have established it to be compulsory. Successful police officers in the past and in the contemporary world have attributed their success to maintaining a high degree of moral standards specifically integrity.

Ability to make stern decisions based on legal knowledge is a profound and mandatory characteristic possessed by a police officer. Every day police officers are faced with challenges concerning criminal and civil activities that call for legal insight and expansive knowledge on the codes of law to make decisions. Police officer’s inability to make decisions is not only a threat to the public but also a threat to himself or herself. Although a legal information system may seem difficult and intimidating, it is critical police officers to have a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the legal formalities. Knowledge on the codes of law is essential in guiding them in the execution of duties specifically making wise decisions.

There are exceptional police officers across the world whom in any day considered good based on their characters. The list is enormous, however; the focus will be on one officer Matt Peterson serving in the NYPD. This officer is an example of an intuitive, punctual, devoted, compassionate, and decisive police officer. Additionally, he is well versed with the legal system of his jurisdiction.
