The poem that seems to fit in this discussion board entry is “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks. Almost everything about the poem is impressive as the poet breaks tradition. One would imagine that for a poet to make meaningful sense in her works, she must make it long. However, Brooks seems to break this notion about length by writing a really short poem. This is the first thing that makes the poem notable. Another thing that is striking about the poem is the message that it passes considering the nature of the poet. She is an older woman who writes about these seven boys who have supposedly missed school and do not care. It is her attempt to reason as these boys reason that then becomes impressive. First of all, she is not a school-going boy like the seven boys. Nonetheless, she is able to get into their respective minds and suggest what she thinks the boys are thinking about (Brooks, 1987).

Brooks definitely fits with other writers read over the course by her choice of thematic concerns. Just like the other writers, she chooses to explore the theme of human beings and their quest in life. Apart from highlighting the fact that the boys are meant to be in school at the time that she writes about them, she also brings in other ideas. For example, the mention of a jazzy June could suggest that the boys are human beings who like to indulge in happy en devours once in a while.
