Incivility is a common issue among nursing staff in health care settings. It is very important to foster civility among nursing staffs. Clark (2010) defines civility as “authentic respect for others that requires time, presence and willingness to engage in genuine discourse and intention to seek common ground.” Nurses play a critical role in creating a culture of civility and respect in nursing education as well as in clinical practice. This paper will delve at discussing how civility affect my role as both a student and a nurse. The paper will also outline the importance of the nurse’s role on a team.

Incorporating civility in the school’s program can have far-reaching impact. It will help pre-empt problems before they arise as well as help prepare nursing students for a future which they can positively redirect negative situations (Assessment Technologies Institute, 2018). From the nursing perspective, incivility can lead to dire consequences. In health care settings and nursing school, civility matters because treating colleagues with respect are requisite to effective communication and creating high-functioning teams (Clark, 2010). The behavior of an individual can affect others, and in extreme situations, it can result in psychological and physiological distress. As a whole, it degrades the overall learning environment.

Fostering civility can help one create and sustain healthy work environments. Organizations that foster civility ensures its employees abide by the code of conduct it has established (Assessment Technologies Institute, 2018). This ensures that the nurses commit to acting in ways that are ethical and professional, as well as in ways that lead to safe, high-quality patient care. It also ensures that nurses maintain standards of personal conduct that reflect well on the profession and enhance public confidence.
