There is normally a feeling of satisfaction that one gets upon attaining a certain achievement in life and so for me becoming a nurse is one such achievement that is likely to bring me so much satisfaction. Nursing as a career is quite rewarding and has a way of making one progress in life. This is because nursing has so many facets to it and thus it gives one an opportunity to advance in various areas in the health care sector. There are so many definitions on what a nurse really is but the general definition embodies the value of the nurse in the health sector when it comes to assisting patients and other professionals in the health sector. It therefore means that a nurse works in a vast and stressful environment and so stress is a key factor for the nurse. A nurse must learn to handle stress and become total well in order to function properly at work. The level of stress that a nurse undergoes is tremendous and so for proper delivery of work and services at the work station, one must be in a position to control and manage stress properly.
So basically what does the nursing profession entails? When I was young, my mother did take care of me. She had a passion of taking care of people. At no point in time did I ever see my mother turn down any person who sought her help. She would receive calls from all quarters from people who did fall ill, to those that did injure themselves. She did love her job of helping others and others did prefer her helping them. It is like she was born to serve others and serve them diligently. My mother was and is still a nurse and this is one reason that really pushes me towards the nursing profession. I want to become a nurse because just like my mother helping others is part of me and in some way I feel that it is an intrinsic feature and characteristic within me. There is nothing as rewarding in life as helping those in crisis at least according to my personal values of life. It is also common knowledge that as nurses help others there are those who will appreciate the good work of the nurse yet there are others who will always have resentment and not show appreciation. It is therefore not the appreciation or lack of it that motivates me but the fact that I can get an opportunity to help others that pushes me towards pursuing a course in nursing.

I also do not just want to become a nurse but a registered nurse (RN). Once one becomes a registered nurse there are so many options available for the individual to serve. One can work with the children, the terminally ill, the casualties department, and the elderly. The options are limitless and the opportunities are immense. Almost all other health care professionals have specific roles that they must perform yet for nurses the responsibilities are general and thus it offers numerous opportunities for passionate individuals like me who are always ready to serve. There are so many different spheres of nursing and this not just makes nursing unique but also makes nursing have so many paths that one can pursue. Nursing is not just a basic profession as it appears, it is actually a very vast area in the health profession. Upon the decision to become a nurse I have had the opportunity to consider all specialties that I can engage in. One of the areas that interests me is the critical area where one has to exude intense energy and speed in saving lives. There is no time to waste in the critical area. There are other areas such as anesthesiology among others.
A nurse is just not just an individual that assists the ill in the society. A nurse has to be kind, put the interests of the first, show kindness and always deliver services in a professional manner. A nurse has numerous responsibilities and the society just knows the general responsibilities of taking care of the ill. The nurses of the current age are stepping out the shadows of the doctors and are standing on their own. Unlike the days of my mother, nurses have more respect and have specific assignments thus allowing the nurses to function independently and this gains them more respect and makes them shoulder more responsibilities. A registered nurse has the authority to offer supplies of treatment to their patients and at times the patients do not even have to meet a doctor in the process. A registered nurse also educates the patients on how to improve their health status as well. A registered nurse too has the responsibility to evaluate the patient’s care plan and at the same time recommends the as well as initiates the discharge plan in case one is in a healthy facility under the in-patient section. It is thus common knowledge that a registered nurse has so many responsibilities that border on understanding the situation of the patient, administration of the patient’s medication, evaluation of the effects and outcome of the medication and even having to operate complex machine and equipment at the health facility that will help in saving lives. All these functions and duties requires kindness, diligence and putting the interests of others before that of the nurse.
It is also important that a nurse develops certain skills and I am determined to embrace these skills. Some of these skills include communication skills. A successful must be good in speaking and listening which are the basic forms of communication. Nurses need to be able to follow instructions of medication of the patients, have a better way of communicating the same to the patients and their relatives who will then be able to use the drugs and medications appropriately. The nurses also must listen keenly to the directions that doctors give and also be able to communicate effects back to the doctors for the appropriate course of action. Attention to details is yet another unique skill and character that nurses require. A nurse should be able to be keen enough to details when talking to patients and when administering any medicine should take into account the responses by the patients. Every single detail matters in the health care profession. Promptness and problem solving skills are yet other vital skills that all nurses require. Nurse must be in a position to preempt a problem and be prompt enough to avert any negative outcome of the problem. A nurse should be in a position to come up with a solution when called upon and thus require problem solving skills. Caring and empathetic skills are also vital for any nurse in the health care profession. A nurse should be able to show care at all times because that is the bare minimum that the profession requires of the nurse. Empathy has everything to do with showing concerning yet not being sympathetic. It devoid of emotions as it creates assurances and logic to the patients who need the support at the time. Care and empathy goes together and thus no one can care without showing empathy if the individual is truly a nurse.
There is perhaps no career that is as busy as nursing currently in the world. Nurses move constantly, they work under pressure, their schedules are tight and at times they need to work at odd hours. This then means that nurses should take care of their own health even as they take care of others in the health facilities and other spaces. To perform under such stress, nurses require total wellness on their lives before they can make others well and so stress management is one thing that is vital in the nursing profession. I have come to learn that a nurse needs to do away with some foods that will give room for fatigue ingredients and am already trying to do away with such foods as a way of preparing my body for what lies ahead. I have come to learn that stimulants like coffee and tea are not appropriate for nurses and so I am focusing on carbohydrates as the major source of energy for me. Fitness and flexibility too are vital and so I am registered with a gym where I do aerobics and yoga so that when I turn into the profession I do not feel the strain from the strenuous activities. To manage stress I have embarked on meditation and channeling of energy to positive stuff in my life.
Generally, I feel that I have made the correct choice in joining the nursing profession. The career is quite rewarding not just in terms of pay but also personal satisfaction and the fact that I will get an opportunity to serve others. At 29 years of age, I believe I have the maturity to understand and decide on the best course for my life and so nursing to me is the career of choice that will bring great satisfaction to me.
