Article Outline

In the article, Flügge, Westhoff, & Leister (2016) explore one of the critical processes that are central to all life on earth, which is photosynthesis, indicating that it is essential towards ensuring that the oxygen saturation levels in the atmosphere are sustainable. The researchers begin by discussing what is currently known about photosynthesis as a chemical process occurring in plants while seeing to highlight its importance concerning life on earth. Flügge, Westhoff, & Leister (2016) build on the understanding that photosynthesis allowing for the synthesizing of organic compounds, which include carbon dioxide and water while using light with the intention being towards producing oxygen. That gives readers a basic understanding of what the process is all about, which also builds on details of the process, especially concerning the synthesis of chemical compounds. The researchers believe that this is important in their research as a way of ensuring that they can build on recent advancements in this understanding.

Flügge, Westhoff, & Leister (2016) also focus on some of the recent advancements in trying to understand photosynthesis as a chemical process, which provides them with different perspectives of what to consider in their bid to describing this process. Some of the critical perspectives that the researchers explore include light reactions and carbon assimilation, leaves and canopy structure, and source-sink relationships. In each of these perspectives, the researchers can provide readers with an in-depth understanding of how photosynthesis occurs with the sole focus being towards ensuring that the readers would understand the process in a different way. The impacts that the study has had is that it has helped in establishing a much more useful framework through which to change the way chemical processes can be evaluated with the sole intention being towards improving readers’ understanding.

Summary of What I Have Learned

By engaging in this assignment, I have been able to learn several critical aspects concerning photosynthesis, especially as it relates to its importance in seeking to support life on earth. I must take note of the fact that I did not think that I would be able to learn a lot when I was selecting this topic, but this has changed significantly based on what I have gathered from the assignment. Firstly, I was able to learn that although photosynthesis is a process that is vital in plants, it tends to have a significant impact on the atmosphere taking into account that the plants consume carbon dioxide and, in turn, release oxygen back into the atmosphere. That means that photosynthesis is a process that ought to be viewed based on its mutual benefits to both plants and animals.

Secondly, I was able to learn that photosynthesis ought to be viewed as a critical solution to the main problem that the world is facing today, climate change. Climate change is a significant environmental problem, which is brought about by an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, one of which is carbon dioxide. From this assignment, I learned that the world would be able to deal with this issue by focusing on an approach through which to plant more trees to increase the rate at which photosynthesis is occurring in the world. Lastly, I learned that although photosynthesis is well understood, more research is essential towards trying to get a clear understanding of the process occurring in plants. The assignment provided me with a clear understanding of the fact that there still exists a gap concerning knowledge on this topic; thus, creating the need for further research.
